The annual Trio Meeting is the term we use to refer to the memorable tradition among the Gavel Clubs of the University of Colombo, the University of Sri Jayawardenapura, and the University of Moratuwa. This tradition which has been continuing on for some years, is where one of the three universities hosts an Educational Meeting for the respective Gavel Clubs of each university to attend together, hence the name, Trio Meeting. This year, on the 28th of January 2024, the Gavel Club of University of Sri Jayawardenepura had the honour of hosting the event, bringing together Gaveliers from all three universities for a day of friendship, laughter, and insightful speeches.
Before the official commencement of the meeting, the air inside the auditorium was full of excitement about making new friends, as Gaveliers from all three universities joined together giving introductions and making casual conversations.
The president of the Gavel Club of Sri-Jayawardenapura, GV Ranulie officially started the meeting and, everyone rose up to sing the national anthem and to give the toastmaster’s oath. The toastmaster of the day, GV Mahisha introduced the fascinating theme ‘Around the World’, anticipating and excited to hear all the wild stories and experiences from all Gaveliers present at the meeting.
The most intriguing part of the event was the Round Robin session, masterfully conducted by GV Sasindi from the Gavel Club of University of Moratuwa, or as we like to call it, Gavel Mora for short. Participants shared their experiences of getting lost, resulting in a cascade of laughter and unique tales. From finding oneself lost inside the university to airports around the world, the stories highlighted the humour and humanity in our shared experiences.
The Table Topics round, conducted by the fun duo GV Althaaf and GV Ovindu, proved to be a highlight of the meeting, with Gaveliers sharing captivating stories and experiences. From journeys across the seas to high mountains and foreign currency-related experiences, each speech offered a diverse range of perspectives. A few Gaveliers from Gavel UOC proudly showcased their public speaking skills during this session too; GV Thishakya shared her perspective on which era she would choose to visit if given the chance, providing a unique and thought-provoking insight, meanwhile, GV Sayuri lightened the mood with a hilarious tale of her misadventures in trying to get the right order at a restaurant, captivating the audience with her storytelling skills.
After all the great speeches, the evaluators from all 3 universities, GV Asfaq, GV Theshani and GV Chemini along with their TAG team, consisting of the Timer GV Zinnerah, Ah Counter GV Venuri and Grammarian GV Varun, gave their praises to all speakers and provided valuable insights on improvements as pieces of advice to upgrade our next speeches. The Trio Meeting hosted by Gavel Japura was a success, leaving Gaveliers from all three universities with warm memories and strengthened connections. The generous hospitality of Gavel Japura is also appreciated, providing us with cooling beverages and delicious food. This meeting showcased the talent and unique perspectives within the Gavel Club community, highlighting the importance of such gatherings in encouraging personal and professional growth.
