On the 20th of January 2024, the Gavel Club of the University of Colombo held its 306th Educational Meeting under the theme “The Late Polar Express”. Despite being well past the official Christmas season, the Gavel members gathered to celebrate the spirit of Christmas with enthusiasm and friendship. The festive atmosphere was evident from the moment one stepped into the hall, adorned with little green paper Christmas trees, pictures of Santa Claus, and light bulbs, creating a warm and Christmassy atmosphere.
GV Vinupa, the President of the Gavel Club, officially called the meeting to order, with a warm seasonal greeting. The Toastmaster of the Day (TMOD), Gavelier Venuri, then began the proceedings with an energetic introduction, highlighting the theme and emphasizing the idea that Christmas lasts all year when spent with loved ones and embracing the spirit of giving. She then introduced the key role players for the meeting, the General Evaluator GV Amrah, and her TAG team; Timer GV Thisarani, Ah-Counter GV Harishma, and Grammarian GV Nadhiya, each explaining their roles to ensure the smooth conduct of the session. The Grammarian also unveiled the “Word of the Day,” which was “Euphoric,” setting up an euphoric tone for a positive and joyful meeting.
The Round-Robin master, GV Rumeshika led a session where members shared heartwarming stories about the spirit of giving, revolving around memorable gifts given or received during Christmas. Each member incorporated the “Word of the Day” into their reflections, enhancing the linguistic richness of the meeting. The Table Topic session continued the festive spirit, handled by GV Chathura, with members delivering warm and magical speeches on the holiday season. The topics were centered around giving, generosity, family, and love, symbolizing the wonderful spirit of Christmas. It showcased the club members’ ability to think on their feet and express themselves eloquently.
To add a playful touch to the meeting, members were divided into three groups to participate in several entertaining games. The Christmas Charades game, Reverse Order, and an intense Scavenger Hunt for Santa’s Sack, containing a treasure trove of chocolates which, as a matter of fact, sent all Gaveliers running around the Science faculty in a frenzy, brought out the competitive yet joyful side of the Gavel Club members. The games boosted team spirit and further elevated the festive mood of the gathering while also giving a sweet prize to the winners, which of course, was shared all around in the end.
The Gavel Club’s 306th “The Late Polar Express,” was a massive success in spreading joy and celebrating the Christmas spirit well beyond its traditional time frame. The combination of heartfelt speeches, interactive sessions, and festive games made it an unforgettable event for all members, emphasizing the importance of togetherness and the joy of giving throughout the entire year. The meeting proved that in Gavel UOC, it is never too late to celebrate love and friendship.
