On the 10th of August, under the tender warmth of a sweet morning, Gavel UOC gathered for its 323rd Educational Meeting, marking the first assembly for the 24/25 term. The theme, “Breaking New Ground,” was not just a phrase but a powerful symbol of the fresh start this new term promises, infused with the energy and vision of the newly appointed executive committee.
Gavelier Minili Bandara, serving as the Toastmaster of the day, gracefully set the tone for the meeting. She spoke of how this theme embodies a new chapter, not just for the club, but for each Gavelier present, urging everyone to embrace the journey ahead with open hearts and minds. The spotlight then shifted to the General Evaluator, Gavelier Nethmi, who introduced the enthusiastic TAG team. Gavelier Quency took on the role of Timer, Gavelier Chathura as the Ah-Counter, and with a fresh perspective, newbie Gavelier Kavidu stepped in as the Grammarian.
The Round Robin session, skill fully led by Gavelier Dumindi, was a vibrant warm up, igniting the room with stories of stepping beyond comfort zones. Each tale, shared with passion and a spark of new beginnings, perfectly captured the spirit of “Breaking New Ground.” The room buzzed with a collective excitement, a shared commitment to growth and discovery.
Next came the Table Topics session, under the keen eye of Gavelier Nimal. He presented thought provoking topics that pushed participants to dig deep “The Leap of Faith That Transformed My Life,” “When Opportunity Knocks,” and “The Underrated Comfort Zone.” A hidden topic added an element of surprise, challenging speakers to think quickly and speak from the heart. Among the speakers were three courageous newbies who stepped up to deliver their first-ever speeches, earning the honorary title of “Legends” for their bravery. Experienced Gaveliers Nivedhitha and Amnaa also contributed, sharing insights and experiences that resonated deeply with everyone.
Gavelier Vinupa, the Table Topics Evaluator, offered invaluable advice to all, especially the newcomers. His feedback, delivered with warmth and precision, provided the tools each speaker needed to hone their skills and grow as confident orators. As the meeting drew to a close, the General Evaluator reflected on the event, praising the camaraderie and enthusiasm that filled the room. President Gavelier Nuhaa then officially wrapped up the meeting, but the connections forged during the session continued to blossom. Over plain tea and cake, members chatted, laughed, and bonded, sealing the sense of community that makes Gavel UOC so special.
This first Educational Meeting of the term was more than just a gathering; it was the beginning of a new journey, a shared commitment to growth, and a celebration of the opportunities that lie ahead. The energy and optimism of the day set a positive tone, promising a year of breakthroughs and meaningful experiences.
