Twilight was coming and Vishael knew that he should be going.
He slowly got onto his feet and started walking. A cold wind passed by and he could feel a slight shiver. He looked around and was shocked to see that nobody was around. He hurried his steps. Suddenly, everything went dark. He tried hard to find his way through the darkness. Terrified, he cautiously took a step forward. He started walking slowly again. After a few steps, he stumbled upon a bottle and fell onto the ground.
He heard something break. He could hear some unfamiliar sounds. A sudden rush of wind slapped his face. The temperature of the environment dropped by several degrees.
He could feel a sharp pain around his ankle. Before figuring out what it was, he heard a deep voice.
“Thank you for setting me free,” the voice said.
Vishael froze. It took him some time to find his voice. ”Are you…… are you a ghost?”
“Yes, yes, I am. I am a so-called ghost,” the voice replied.
Vishael could feel all his energy draining away from him. He tried to get onto his feet and run.But his legs seemed to have forgotten how to walk.
Instead, he murmured, “Please, don’t kill me. Have mercy, let me go.”
The voice, this time in a surprised tone, said; “Why should I kill you after you’ve set me free?”
Vishael slowly looked up. Still, he didn’t dare to look at the ghost. His eyes downcast, he whispered in disbelief; “So you’ll let me go? You don’t plan to kill me?”
“We ghosts, know gratitude. We never do such things,” the ghost said with pride.
“But I thought you were evil,” Vishael said in a slow voice.
“Is it ghosts who betray their best friends? Is it us who kill their own kind? Is it us who envy our neighbours? Is it us who have hearts filled with evil? Is it us who destroy the planet or is it us
who invent weapons to destroy millions of lives? Now child, you tell me, who the evil ones are,” the ghost said firmly. “Child, don’t fear the unknown, fear the known.”
Vishael slowly raised his head. He realised that he should be more afraid of the thieves and thugs he would meet on his way back home than the ghost. He also realised, a fake friend could
be more dangerous than a ghost.
Light returned to the surroundings. Vishael slowly got up and started walking.
