Achieving success is remarkable, but sustaining it over a decade is truly incredible.
The Gavel Club of University of Colombo has finally reached this milestone, celebrating 10 years of continuous growth and achievement on November 1st, 2024. For a decade, the club has nurtured countless talented individuals, shaping them into successful people and shining as the premier soft skills club at University of Colombo. As children of Gavel, it’s time for us, Gaveliers, to come together and celebrate our mother club’s success.
A fresh Saturday evening started with a spread of bakery savories from crispy samosas to biscuits, chips, and drinks, as Gaveliers gathered at Independence Square. After a brief search for the perfect picnic spot (one without bothersome ants or insect invasions), an orange mat was laid out on the grass, and the feast was carefully arranged. Thanks to some creative minds, the food display turned into an art of its own. As the Gaveliers arrived one by one, they were welcomed with hugs and smiles. In a surprise twist, some unfamiliar faces wandered into our picnic, only to reveal they were not strangers but our beloved seniors. “Oh my gosh, did I say old? I mean… our seniors!” our slightly flustered President Nuhaa nervously corrected herself, flashing a warm smile to greet them.
Gv.Nuhaa then gave us a challenge to go and chat with the seniors. Easy, right? Well, it felt a little like that awkward moment at a family wedding when you’re told to talk to distant relatives you’ve never met before. But, as soon as we started interacting, the atmosphere flipped 360 degrees. Conversations flowed effortlessly, filled with jokes, stories, and laughter. And of course, the food was the star of the evening. Sandwiches in one hand, chocolate in the other, drinks passed around everywhere, yes it was pure joy! Meanwhile, Gv.Minili was on a mission, capturing every moment to ensure these memories would last forever.
In every movie, and every stage of life, we can always expect the villain’s entry. Without them, there would be no twists in our journey. And yes, the villain of our picnic arrived, the unknown guest. Let me describe this troublemaker: no shape, but armed with a dark, spongy mass of clouds. Soon enough, he unleashed his weapon water droplets. Yes, you guessed it, the RAIN! First, a few drops… then another, and before we knew it, he had dumped his entire arsenal. But, as if blessed by the spirit of Gavel, we quickly secured our food and rushed into the shelter of Independence Square. Some of us with umbrellas, others without, we gathered inside, shaking off the surprise attack. Groups began to form, seniors reconnected, juniors bonded, and while some worried about our villain, I soon realized something beautiful, the sky’s dark clouds, the fresh green surroundings, and the rain created a view so stunning, it was hard to be mad at our uninvited guest. Rain wasn’t really the villain; it was just an unexpected guest who made the day more beautiful.
Soon, the rain cleared, and we returned to the greens for our trivia games. We were divided into two groups, old Gaveliers versus new, and the questions took us on a nostalgic trip through Gavel’s past. Needless to say, the seniors, with their treasure trove of memories, easily won the game. But win or lose, laughter and food brought us all back together, and the photo sessions increased tenfold. A cheerful group photo was snapped, right before our villain returned. Or should I say, our uninvited guest? Clearly, the rain was having too much fun and decided to join us once more. Back inside Independence Square, the seniors gave speeches that left us inspired. They shared the early struggles of Gavel’s journey, reminding us how far we’ve come as we now celebrate its 10th anniversary. The heartfelt speeches truly moved the new members, reminding us of the strong foundation we stand on today.
And then, the photo gallery resumed, this time a collection of golden memories that will stay with us forever. As the event came to an end, it was a bittersweet moment. Slowly, one by one, like leaves falling from a tree, we all began to part ways, each carrying with us incredible memories of a day we’ll never forget. But as we stepped away, we knew one thing for sure: Gavel Never Stops….!
