There’s one person even the ghost of chaos fears, and she’s the hypothetical Nobel Prize winner for being organized. Wait, who am I talking about? A question might arise in your curious mind. Well, she is none other than the Gavelier and Vice President Membership of the Gavel Club, University of Colombo, Nethmi Weerakoon! She also happens to be one of my batchmates, which gives me ample knowledge to write about her.
You might wonder, “Janitha, why did you choose her as the most admired Gavelier when there are so many other admirable Gaveliers out there?” If someone asks me that question, I have a list of reasons.
First of all, she is the most organized and well-structured person I have ever interacted with. She is a superfan of organizing even the tiniest details. Whenever she takes part in a group project, she meticulously plans everything from beginning to end so that the other members do not have to worry much about the progress. As a Gavelier, the lesson I have adopted from her is the importance of organizing my scattered nature in speeches and generally having a structure in every activity of life.
Another remarkable quality I’ve observed in her is her ability to be an objective evaluator and decision-maker. When evaluating speeches, it’s crucial to keep personal biases out of the process to maintain fairness. GV Nethmi embodies this principle, offering balanced and constructive feedback, which is a quality I greatly admire.
GV Nethmi’s dedication and action-oriented mindset make her stand out in any organization she’s part of. As a committed Gavelier, she has invited numerous university students to join the Gavel Club. This fulfills the promise in the Competent Communication (CC) manual to bring guests to meetings so they can witness the benefits of Toastmasters membership.
There’s an old saying: “Time is more precious than gold.” Time management is a necessary skill one has to master in order to thrive in this fast-paced world. GV Nethmi is a pro when it comes to managing time and tackling deadlines, and that is another lesson I have learned from her.
By now you likely have a clear idea of why I chose GV Nethmi as the Gavelier I admire most. If you ever find yourself trapped in a chaotic situation, she’s undoubtedly the person you’d want to summon!
